Meet the tailorbird—a tiny bird that builds its home by sewing living leaves together.

Using her feet, she pulls the leaves into place. Then she pierces tiny holes with her beak and threads plant fibers and spider silk through them, one careful stitch at a time. Her leafy home can require nearly 200 stitches and several days of work—and she does it all without hands, a needle, or sewing lessons.

Her charming mate helps by gathering fibers, soft plant fluff, grass, and feathers. Together, they transform the leafy shell into a warm, cushioned nursery for their chicks.
